Telecom Regulatory Authority of India or TRAI is a governing body that oversees regulations and policies for India’s telecommunication sector. They have recently made it mandatory for a person that requires to send bulk SMS to register on a DLT portal. Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) is a block-chain based registration system which means it is anonymous and secure. The main advantage of implementing DLT and requiring telecom companies to register themselves and their users is to reduce spam SMS significantly.Â
We will now explain how to register an entity on the DLT platforms and give alternatives. A user registration consists of two main steps; obtaining a unique ID and adding telemarketer details.
Step 1: Unique ID
Here are links to major DLT registration platforms. Select the one to your liking and fill in the details. Once done, submit your form and you will receive a temporary ID. These details will be verified by an operator who will provide you with a unique ID.Â
Tip: Leave the payment details blank while filling the form.

Step 2: Add a header
Once Step 1 is complete, the entity can move forward to choose their sender ID or header on the portal dashboard. There are two categories of headers for different requirements and use cases; promotional and others.Â
- Promotional: This category of bulk SMS is for running campaigns, offers, discounts, and promotions. Here, you have to select a six-digit numeric figure as your header and provide the reason for choosing so.
- Others: Transactional messages fall under this category, such as alerts, notifications, and updates. Here too, you have to select a six-digit numeric figure as your header and provide the reason for choosing so.
Note: The Sender ID should match the entity name.
Note: Capital and small letters are different; ‘A’ ≠‘a.’
Step 3: Choose a telemarketer.
You can choose a telemarketer of your choice and search via the search engine for name or ID from the side menu.Â
